1. Clean gutters and downspouts: Clear out leaves and debris, and make sure water can flow freely. Why it matters: Blocked gutters can lead to ice buildup, water damage and foundation issues when temperatures drop. 2. Check the furnace and change the filter: Have your furnace inspected if needed and replace your furnace filter. Why it matters: A clean filter helps maintain airflow and efficiency, and a pre-winter check can catch problems before you need the heat. 3. Protect the pipes: Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses and shut off exterior water lines if applicable. Why it matters: Frozen pipes can burst and cause significant water damage. 4. Check the roof and attic: Look for damaged or missing shingles, inspect flashing and check the attic for signs of moisture or inadequate insulation. Why it matters: The roof is your home’s first defense against snow, ice and moisture. 5. Seal up drafts: Check around windows, doors, vents and other openings for gaps or cracks. Replace worn weatherstripping and caulk where needed. Why it matters: Small drafts can mean higher heating bills and a less comfortable home all winter. 6. Get your snow and ice gear ready: Before the first snowfall, make sure you have a working snow shovel, ice melt and anything else you need for winter. Why it matters: Don’t wait for the first big snowfall to discover you’re missing something! | |
